Elsie Hood

The Lord called Elsie Lindgren Hood home at the age of 98 on March 25, 2024 in Roswell, New Mexico. At Elsie’s request there will be no services held. Her wishes are to have her ashes buried with her husband and daughter. Elsie was born in Lawton, Oklahoma to Ivar and Katie Penskofer Lindgren on November 27, 1925. She married James William Hood February 25, 1950 in Cache, Oklahoma. She was a dedicated mother of 5 girls. She was a proud grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Elsie is preceded in death by her husband Bill Hood in 1968, her parents, 8 brothers and sisters, a daughter Anna Marie who died in infancy, a daughter Mary Beth Hood Towndrow, grandson Eric Jason McGarrah and great grand daughter Destinee Kelly. Elsie is survived by 4 daughters. Rhonda [Jim] Van Winkle, Liz [Bill] Bartlett, Jo Ann [Darryl] Bunn and Melinda Weatherford. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Michelle [Brian] Bailey, Stephanie Mason, Bill [Araceli] Bartlett, Jennifer [Andy] Johnson, Elisha [Josh] Bunn, Rebecca Weatherford, James Weatherford and too many great and greatgreat grandchildren to name. Elsie was stubborn and a fighter. She survived 2 bouts of COVID at age 97. She lived in her own home until recently. She actually loved her family so much she wanted to live forever. 2 days before her passing she said she had hoped to live to see her great great grandkids grow. Her memory was remarkable and she never forgot a thing. Elsie loved to garden. She planted an apricot seed and the tree still bears wonderful fruit. She loved to sew. She made many dresses for her daughters. Lots of love and rick-rack went into those dresses. She loved to make quilts. She started making quilts for her grandchildren and continued to make them for all the great and great-great grandchildren that came along. If she wasn’t making lap quilts she was making doll quilts and pillows for everyone’s dolls. Many of the quilts are thread bare from being loved so much. Just last year she started making dog quilts. Her fried chicken and chicken and dumplings were the best and was requested at many meals. She also made oatmeal and peanut butter cookies, fried apple pies, donuts and homemade bread. She always ate the back and the neck of the chicken and her daughters always thought they were her favorite pieces and she loved them. When older they realized it was to make sure there was enough for all the girls before she would eat any other pieces. She sacrificed so much to make sure they had what they needed. She had to be at Sunset Villa Rehab for her final months. She actually enjoyed her time there loving the bingo, activities and so many of the caring staff who called her Grandma. She also made new friends of the residents there, even asking her family to go and buy gifts she could give them. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks everyone who had a hand in her care. All who knew her loved her and called her Grandma Hood. She never met a stranger and loved and accepted everyone with her whole heart. We feel so blessed to have had her in our lives for so many years.
