James Rubin Smith, Jr. “RED’s”, residence changed from his earthly home to a mansion in Heaven on Saturday, April 18, 2015. His final days were spent in the company of family and friends, that he had touched in some way, during his life. James was raised in Brownwood, Texas, where he joined the U.S. Air Force, immediately following high school in 1943. While stationed in England, he flew 30 missions as a Tail gunner in a B17. James was a member of the WW2 Lucky Bastard’s Club (google it). After military service, he attended North Texas State University and Texas Christian University, studying music and accounting. After college, James moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. While playing bass with a traveling swing band in southeastern New Mexico, he met Barbara Davis in Artesia. James married Barbara after knowing her for only three weeks. They were married for almost 60 years. Surviving James is a sister; Alice Morris of Brownwood, TX; children: Melany Gray and her husband Alton of Shawnee, OK, and their children McKenzie (Brian) and Kevin (Nikki); Debra Belyeu and her husband Ted of Roswell and their children Deacon (Boston) and Vance (Valerie); J Mark Smith and his wife Tracy of Ashland, WI and their two children C.J. and Josh. Also surviving James are his six perfect great-grandchildren. “Dad loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. His life exemplified God’s faithfulness to the powerful and everlasting promises of protection, mercy and grace proclaimed in His WORD for those who love and trust in His name.” The family wishes to thank so many who helped with his care over the past few years. Especially Julie Adams, the staff at La Villa, ENMMC, Mission Arch and many faithful friends. You know who you are. We love you much!
