Steven Carl Cusack

Steven Carl Cusack died suddenly on March 23, 2026, in Vaughn, NM, on what was supposed to be an overnight trip to Albuquerque. Steve was born in Roswell, NM on September 3, 1952, to John P. Cusack Jr, and Helen Tesche Cusack, the 3rd of 6 children. He attended St. Peter’s Catholic school, high school at the Abbey in Canon City, Colorado, then one year at Colorado State. He took one year off from school to drive a grain truck through Colorado and Kansas. His education resumed at Vanderbilt, and he graduated in 1976. A friend of his was from Louisville, KY and Steve moved there after graduation. He was employed for a short time as a car salesman but put in an application with the Louisville Police Force and was hired in 1977. The Sergeant in the Chief’s office, James Simon, saw on Steve’s application that he was from New Mexico, and Sergeant Simon had taken his family there twice for vacations, he invited Steve out to his house, that is where Steve met his future wife, Rita. They started dating in January 1978, married on October 16, 1982. Their daughter Annie was born January 16, 1990, but unfortunately passed away June 19, 1998. After 22 years of service, Steve retired and moved to Raton, NM and took Trinidad State’s 3 year Gunsmithing course. There he met a fellow student who would become his best friend, Willy Keeler, and his wife Linda. Steve and Rita bought a house in Roswell, NM in 2008 and finally moved there in 2010. Attending Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, he met and became friends with Phil Markin, “Chief”. Steve had eclectic tastes in books, art, movies, music and he really enjoyed his cigars. Steve also enjoyed his cats; Gustav, Max, Pita, and Boyfriend. He shot Trap, and Skeet and joined the Roswell Gun Club. At the Skeet club, Steve and Rita met their friend, Nancy Burnham. Steve was a person who could talk to anyone, and he had a quick wit. Sometimes gruff on the outside, he could be very kind and generous. Steve is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rita, friends Willy, Linda, Phil and Nancy; brothers John, Tim (Susie), Craig; sister Karen (Jeff); Rita’s sister Helen Tarter (Tom) and brother-in-law, Mark Cassidy; nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, daughter Annie, sister Cathie; Rita’s sisters; Mary, Teresa, and Martha. A Funeral Mass will be held at Assumption Parish, 2808 N. Kentucky Ave., Roswell, NM 88201, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Cavehill Cemetery in Louisville, KY on a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Assumption Parish.
