Tenelia "Kay" Lewis

Tenelia Kay Lewis passed away on February 16, 2026, and George Raymond Lewis died of a broken heart five days later on February 21, 2026. They had been married almost 60 years. Kay was born July 5, 1946, in Artesia NM to Ivis Lewis and Frances Smith Lewis. Kay was a majorette with the Artesia High School Band and graduated from Artesia High School in 1964. Kay graduated from the Dental Hygiene Program at University of New Mexico where she met George and fell in love. Kay was the second ever dental hygienist in Roswell. Kay was one of the founding members of the Wilson-Cobb Genealogy Library in Roswell NM where they resided after they married. She and George served on the Board of Directors of the library and generously supported the library financially and as volunteers for many years. Kay spent many hours researching her family tree and organizing genealogy workshops to help others interested in research. George Raymond Lewis was born July 7, 1944, to Raymond and Evelyn Lewis in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a master’s degree in social work. He retired from the state of New Mexico as a social worker. George served on the original board that started the Assurance Home, a home for abused and neglected teenagers, in the 1980’s. The day after he retired from the state, he accepted a full-time position at the Assurance home where he found his true purpose. George and Kay were huge sports fans, they loved attending local football games and were season ticket holders of the Roswell Invaders minor league baseball team for many years. George and Kay had no children, but they raised West Highland Terriers for many years. Sophie, their current pup, will miss them greatly. Survivors include Mary Jane Moore, George’s sister, nephews and nieces: Edward Fenton, Sara Merop, Caren Williams, Richard Moore, and Scot Moore. Cousins: Leroy Boykin, Tommy Boykin, Lillian Boykin, and Jerry Boykin. The Lewis’s were preceded in death by their parents and George’s sister Ruth Fenton. No services are planned.
