August 11, 1931 - June 25, 2021
On June 25, 2021, Max Hughes joined his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce, who preceded him in death in 2018. Please take a moment and share a kind thought or memory with Max’s family at www.andersonbethany.com. On August 11, 1931, Max was born in Fola, West Virginia, one of 16 children. At the age of 17, he quit school to join the United States Air Force and left West Virginia for the first time with nothing but the clothes on his back. Max thrived in the Air Force, completed his GED, took every educational course he could get into, especially learning advanced electronics, and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant by the end of his four-year enlistment. He served with distinction in Korea. Max’s final duty station was Biggs Air Base in El Paso, TX. Max would eventually settle in Roswell, which would enable him to meet the love of his life, Joyce, and start a family. With a love of flying and airplanes from the Air Force, he obtained a private pilot license, and he flew many times around New Mexico with Joyce. She shared his love of adventure. Max worked road construction for over 40 years, starting as a laborer and working his way up to General Superintendent at Armstrong Construction through dedication, hard work and successful mastery of his craft. In addition, the Air Force electronics training equipped him to maintain a lifelong interest and to be able to build desktop computers from scratch. Max was very outgoing and, at times, could be very mischievous. However, he touched all the lives of the many workers he supervised and their families while working road construction. It was not uncommon for him to be stopped in stores or even airports by prior employees and thanked for his support. Max was quick-witted, faster to smile and loved to laugh. Max was very protective of his family and would do anything for all of them. He will be sorely missed as there is now a hole in our lives. Max will forever be in our thoughts, our hearts and the life lessons he taught. Left behind to treasure Max’s memory are his three sons: Robert Gibson of Dallas TX, Johnny Hughes of Roswell NM, and Terry Hughes of Mountain Home ID and their respective spouses: Buddy Casey, Laurie Hughes and Becky Hughes; one granddaughter, Jessica Hughes; two twin grandsons: Cody and Cory Hughes; two great-grandsons: Carson and Jaydon Hughes; as well as his four sisters: June, Mary, Karen and Frances. Max was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and both of his parents. A viewing will be at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home on Thursday, July 1, 2021, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Graveside services will be held at South Park Cemetery, Roswell, NM, on Friday, July 2, 2021, at 10:00 AM. Tim Arlet of Kindred Hospice will officiate. Flowers are respectfully accepted and may be sent to the service location or a donation made in honor of Max Hughes to a favorite charitable organization of one’s choice. Max’s tribute was written in his honor by his family.
