Abselin Lucero

Abselin O. Lucero, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on March 15, 2016, surrounded, by his loving family. Abselin was born on June 9, 1930, in Dexter, NM, to Benjamin and Ramona Lucero. He grew up and spent his entire life in New Mexico, living in Socorro, San Antonio, Espanola, and making his home in Roswell. On June 19, 1948, he married the love of his life, Maria Franco. Together they raised four children in a loving home, and were happily married for 68 years. Throughout his entire life he was always a “Original Cowboy”, always riding his horses. He was a member of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse. He also carried the mail from White Oaks to Lincoln during the Billy the Kid Days in Lincoln NM. In December of 1999, he participated in The Last Great Cattle Drive of the Millennium, where he rode his horse and herded over five hundred head of cattle from the outskirts of Roswell to Lincoln over the span of five days. He had numerous names given to him by his grandchildren, he was Papa Bear, Pop and Tata. And he was the Ultimate educator to all of them. He could show you and teach anything you needed to know. You would always get a story along with your learning experience. Abselin leaves behind his loving wife, Maria, of their home; his daughters: Lupe Mendoza of Roswell, Cecilia Gomez and husband, Tommy of Dexter; grandchildren: Nancy Colby and husband, Chris of Dexter, Monica Weusi and husband, Akram of San Antonio, Tx, Rebecca Ginanni and husband, Cliff of Lubbock, TX, Toni Gomez of Dexter, NM, Desiree Mendoza and Johnny of Roswell, NM, Marcella Mendoza of Roswell, NM, Frank Jimenez III and Champagne of Colorado Springs, CO, Thomas Gomez and Julietta of Artesia, NM, Elisha Contreras of Roswell, NM, Anthony Gomez and Angela of Hagerman, NM. Also remaining to carry on his legacy are 26 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; his sisters Jackie Copeland of Utah, Rosie Christian of CA; brothers, Benjamin Lucero Jr of CA and Armando Lucero of Roswell, NM. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his son, Abselin Lucero Jr, daughter, Elvira Jimenez, sisters, Adela Franco, and Lucy Copeland; brothers, Anselmo Lucero, Clemente Lucero, Lorenzo Lucero. The family would like to thank the nurses, chaplin and staff from Gentivia Hospice for all their caring and compassion during this time. And also we would like to thank Dr. Vaillant and Dr. Whitwam for caring for our father/grandfather all these years. A rosary service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home & Creamatory at 3:00pm and a service to follow at 6:00pm. Obituary lovingly written by Abselin’s family.
