Carl Schellinger

Carl A. Schellinger, 82, passed away peacefully Monday, June 18, 2018. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Gloria (Stephens) Schellinger; his daughter: Cheryl Schellinger Nace, her husband, Kelley Nace; two granddaughters: Addison Haley Nace and Keifer Emily Nace; and a niece, Crystal Allison. Carl was born December 16, 1935, in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, and grew up in Wildwood, New Jersey. He graduated from Pitman High School in 1953. Carl came to New Mexico when he joined the United States Air Force and was based in Roswell. He worked with radios and spent time in Guam and Hawaii. After serving in the Air Force, he worked as an oil scout for Sinclair Oil during the ‘50s and ‘60s. He then worked as a landman for Yates Petroleum in Artesia and for Reed and Stevens in Roswell. To earn his degree, Carl took night classes, held a job, and took care of his family at the same time, but his education was of great importance to him. Schellinger graduated with his BBA from Eastern New Mexico University in 1974 and opened Carl A. Schellinger Oil Properties that same year. He explored for oil and gas and handled oil and gas transactions involving more than one million acres. Carl served on the Board of Directors, and later as President of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. He was also a Chairman on the Board of United Way of Chaves County. He served on the Roswell Planning and Zoning Commission for eighteen years, eight of which he was the Chairman. Schellinger was highly involved with the American Association of Professional Landmen, serving as both treasurer and president. In 2015, Carl received the New Mexico Landman’s Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication and ethical standards in the profession. Carl loved the outdoors and regularly went fishing with his friends—catching many trout to be shared by all. Carl’s smile lit up rooms. His warm laughter and clever wit always delighted and made his friends and family feel at home wherever he was.
