Helen Alpers

Helen Darlene Alpers, age 91 passed away on October 30th, 2023, in Roswell New Mexico. There will be a Celebration of Helen’s life at First United Methodist Church 200 N Pennsylvania Ave, Roswell NM on Sunday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. Helen was born December 4th 1931, to Boyd C Dreese and Edna Simonson Dreese in Halstead Kansas where she was raised. After graduating from Halstead High School she went on to Hutchinson Junior College in Hutchinson, Kansas where she met and married Nelson B (Doc) Alpers. They were married for 40 years before divorcing. Together they had 4 children: Greg Alpers, Doug Alpers, Brad Alpers and Diane Alpers Leven. Helen was completely devoted to her family and supported them in all of their endeavors. She was a stay at home Mom until Diane started school and then she began working at Goddard High School. Helen worked in the library and then as a Secretary at Goddard before retiring. After retiring, she enjoyed spending her summers in Ruidoso where she started a legacy for her family of spending holidays, family reunions and great times there which continue to this day. Helen also traveled extensively with her family and friends and went on many trips and tours. Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and attended regularly until Covid. She was a member of the Assistance League of Chaves County where she held many offices including President several times. Helen especially enjoyed working in the Assistance League Thrift Store where she would find many interesting treasures that she would purchase for her family. She enjoyed playing games and taught all of her grandkids how to play “Kings Corners”. Helen was an avid bridge player and belonged to numerous bridge clubs. One of Helen’s “Joys” was attending “Club” every Wednesday at Pepper’s with her dear “Club” friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Boyd and Edna, her brother Michael Dreese, and her Sister Katherine Shipp. She is survived by her four children: Greg and wife Jody of Roswell, Doug and wife Dani of Alamogordo, Brad Alpers of Roswell and Diane Leven and husband Neal of Roswell. Helen was extremely proud of her 8 Grandchildren, Kyle Alpers, (Casey) of Roswell , NM, Nick Alpers (Libby) of Brookville MD, Kim LaDuca(Chris) of Roswell, NM, Justin Alpers (Kathy) of Chambersburg PA, Emily Grant (Caleb) of Roswell, NM, Steven DuCharme (Rebekah) of Roswell, NM, Shannon DuCharme of Austin, TX, and Jim Alpers of Fort Worth, TX and her 13 Great Grandchildren: Corbin, Cooper,& Colin Alpers, Jake & Elena Alpers, Jabyn & Tevya LaDuca ,Tyler & Avery Grace Alpers, Hudson & Jake Grant, Abigail and Madeline DuCharme. Helen was Proud to attend her Grandchildren’s sporting and school functions and they brought her great joy every day. Helen devoted her life to her family and sacrificed for them selflessly. Helen Alpers is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her Grandsons, Kyle Alpers, Nick Alpers, Justin Alpers , Steven DuCharme and Jim Alpers. Helen lived independently throughout her life and will be so missed. We wish to extend sincere thanks to her dear care givers Betty Gallegos and June Rivas. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Roswell Community Kitchen, Cowboy Bell Scholarship fund at FUMC and the Assistance League of Chaves County in Helen’s honor.
