Max A. Cummings

Max Cummings, 85, passed away on November 3, 2024, in Roswell, New Mexico. Please take a moment and share a kind thought or memory with Max’s family at www.andersonbethany.com. Max was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on April 8, 1939. He was born to Charles Gordon Cummings and Elsie Marie Cole Cummings. He grew up in Loving, New Mexico. He spent his childhood exploring and enjoying hunting and fishing in and around the Pecos River and Black River of Southeastern New Mexico. As a young man, Max was drafted into the United States Army and served for two years in Munich, Germany. He married Norma Sue Williamson on August 30, 1965, in Loving. Max and Sue lived in Lovington, NM for a couple of years before moving to Roswell where they lived for the rest of their lives. Max had a 42(+) year career with the USFW/USDA serving as a government trapper for APHIS Animal Damage Control, which evolved into Wildlife Services, until his retirement in 2002. Max spent his retirement hunting, fishing and nurturing his wife, Sue. He was also an incredible gardener and shared his bounties with friends, family and neighbors. He was especially known for his yearly garlic harvest which still has progeny today in various cities and states. After Sue's passing in 2019, Max spent even more time enjoying his neighbors, friends and family and his beloved dog, Bella. We will all miss Max's generosity, kindness, humor, love and compassion. Norma Sue Cummings, 76, passed away on May 12, 2019, in Roswell, New Mexico. Sue was born to Robert Williamson and Agnes Mae Davison Williamson on December 5, 1942, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Sue moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico with her mother Agnes around 1950. Sue grew up in Carlsbad. She married Max Cummings in 1965 in Loving. Sue was such a loving mother. She spent her time and energy raising her boys and being active in their sports, hobbies, and school activities. Sue was room mother many, many times at Parkview Elementary where all three of her sons attended school. Sue worked at Sears, JC Penney and Gordons's Jewelers. Sue was always the proud momma and was fiercely devoted to her boys. She would have done anything for her sons. Sue was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Wayne Williamson. Max and Sue are survived by their three sons: Charles and his partner Alexander, Wesley and his wife Melissa, and Robert and his wife Jennifer. Max and Sue are also survived by their grandchildren: Lane, Jamie, Caleb, Chantel, Kiley and Kadie; and great-grandchildren: Jaxson, Kylie and Caius. The Cummings family would like to offer their gratitude to Gentiva Hospice and especially to Max's compassionate nurse, Takiesha. Max's nurses at ENMMC, Adrian and Ray, brought loving comfort to Max during his last few days. We would also like to thank and honor the Lopez family and the Portillo family. Oton and Edelmira Lopez and their children and grandchildren have watched over, cared for and assisted Max and Sue for years. More recently, Hebert Portillo and his wife Laura moved in next door. They, along with their son, Iker, also watched out and cared for Max. Max especially enjoyed the time Iker Portillo and David Lopez spent with him in his last years. Muchas gracias por todo, nuestros amigos. The Cummings brothers have been extremely fortunate and blessed to have such devoted and loving parents. Max and Sue were great parents who taught us right from wrong, how to be compassionate and loving, and how to live honorable and truthful lives. We miss you Mom and Dad and you will forever be in our hearts and in the hearts of those who knew you. Max and Sue have been cremated and will be interred together in Carlsbad Cemetery at a future date.
